Medical Alert is one of many home alert systems that offers contracted systems for their alarms. Rather than directly monitoring their services with an in-house team of agents, they contract out the system, hiring a team of people to take care of selling for them. While this isn’t necessarily the best way to ensure a smooth customer experience, it is still a good way to do business with a strong support team taking care of any calls, alerts or any medical emergency that may occur while you have the service.

The company has over 50 years of experience, which means they definitely know what they’re doing and they must be doing something right in order to continue impressing their clients for that long. The company provides a range of medical alert systems and services as well and makes sure that everything is well monitored and evaluated to make sure they keep up with any needs that their clients have or if they request assistance.

Getting certified equipment is most definitely an important aspect of having a high quality service and Medical Alert offers UL certified equipment that definitely stands up to the tests of time. Included in the system you get are either a pendant or a wristband so you will be able to stay connected in whatever way you feel most comfortable and the base station itself which will provide you with up to 600 feet of signal through the regular connected device.

While it’s not voice activated, the base does provide you with a speakerphone so that you can easily connect with an agent and communicate with them whenever you need. You’ll be able to talk with them clearly even in a different room. Even more important is the fall detection that’s available with the system so you can get help if you fall, even if you don’t have the ability to call for help or press the button yourself. In case you’re in different rooms of the house you can also get wall mounted buttons to call wherever you are.

The pendant and bracelet are very simple to operate and allow you to wear them how you like so you’re comfortable with them all the time. In case of an emergency or if you ever need help you can quickly and easily press the button and get a response from an agent in no time at all. If you are unconscious or unable to press the button for whatever reason after a fall, the system will actually detect this on its own and get help for you right away.

You get a lockbox included in the annual plan as well, which helps you to keep your house safe and make sure that no one is going to get in if you don’t want them to. It also helps your family members to feel more confident with you staying in your own home on your own and makes sure that they can get in if they need to so that you can feel comfortable as well. This lockbox is not included with the other plans that are paid either monthly or semiannually but you can purchase them as add on products as needed.

In-Home Base Unit

Features and Services

If you want something that doesn’t use your own landline you can get an upgrade to a cellular system that will provide you with service anywhere there’s a cell signal. This device is still tied to your home, however, and does not allow for a larger amount of increased versatility or mobility. You still get the bracelet or pendant and a base unit that will keep you connected and you’ll still need to stay within signal range of the base unit, which will receive a cell phone signal of its own and use this to broadcast.

If you’re the type of person who wants to head out and be on the go you can easily do it with this system as well. It offers an on the go program which lets you take your base station with you in the form of a handheld device with a simple case. You’ll get a pendant or bracelet with this system as well and you still get the same fall detection. That means you’ll be able to head out wherever and whenever you want. In case of an emergency, the system uses GPS to locate you and get help to your location.

Whether you decide to go with the landline or the cellular plan, you’ll be able to get high quality service and exceptional quality. The cellular plan connects through AT & T while the landline plan uses whatever service you already have in your home, making it a whole lot easier to get everything you’re looking for. You will also own the equipment when you pay the startup fees and costs associated with the plan and you’ll be able to continue for as long as you want. You won’t get a lot of the extra frills with this program, but you’ll definitely have what you need.

In case of an emergency, this system will alert emergency personnel to get to you as quickly as possible. It will also alert people that you set up as your contacts to get them to the house as quickly as possible and make sure that you are okay and getting the help that you need. While it doesn’t help them get into the house, it does make sure that they are notified and respond to the emergency as well. The people you put on the list for emergency contact should be those who already have keys to your home.

Technical Support

When you’re getting any kind of service you want to make sure that you can get the support that you need at all times. It’s not always going to be easy, but you can most definitely get it with Medical Alert. That’s because Medical Alert is actually always available to help you. They have 24/7 customer support that can make sure you get the tech support that you need whenever you need it. There is also a protection plan that you can purchase at an additional fee to make sure that you aren’t responsible for the costs associated with equipment problems or loss. If you don’t purchase this program replacements costs are $350 each for the regular system and the mobile.

If you do have problems with the system and need a replacement you need to mail in the broken unit and it will be replaced from there. This can result in a little bit of time without a device while you’re waiting for a new unit that works to replace the unit that you’re getting rid of that’s broken. You want to make sure that you are getting ahold of support as quickly as possible to take care of broken or lost equipment to cut down on your time without a unit as much as possible.

One benefit is that you’ll be able to get your system installed quickly and easily because it’s actually entirely plug and play. You get the system in the mail and you’ll be able to simply set it up where you want it and you’ll be able to get through the rest of installation quickly and easily. That means you’re going to have the service up and going fast and you won’t have to worry about additional costs for someone else to install the unit itself and make sure it’s going to work for you.

You’re always going to want a system that’s transparent so you know what to expect and so you can feel comfortable with what you’re paying for. Unfortunately, Medical Alert likes to keep close control over everything that they have. They don’t like to provide a lot of information on their website other than basics on the equipment that’s available and the costs. They also don’t like to provide a lot of information when you first call either, unless they can make sure they’re going to talk you into a sale. That’s definitely not a beneficial way for you to get the information you want about the service.

Customer Support & Reviews

/ 10

Overall, most people seem to be satisfied with the quality of the service and the ability to get help when they need it. A lot of services are add-on and there are a lot of costs involved in getting set up including installation and the equipment. Customers aren’t always happy about the 3-year contract or the fact that there is no fall detection available with Life Alert at any of their plan levels. Instead, the system requires the individual to physically press the button if and when they need assistance, which can be difficult for seniors who might suffer seizures or unconsciousness where they are incapable of pressing the button themselves.

My Medical Alert device is updated, and everything seems to be working pretty good for me. I wear it around my neck all the time, and then at bedtime, I put it right next to the bed. My family checks up on me every day anywhere. I’m still living alone but I’m trying to get people to come in during the day now. There was a time that I was losing my balance, and then I fell backward and couldn’t get back up. I was wearing the alert button and I pushed it and the people were over here. Also, I had trouble the other night because I happen to lean against the counter and I turned it on. But I told the Medical Alert team that everything was okay. I would definitely recommend it.

I like my Medical Alert device, but it wasn’t explained really well to me when I got it. I got three things – a big necklace, a smaller necklace, and a watch band that I wear at night. I fell one time and I couldn’t get back up but my daughter was here and we talked about how come my bracelet hadn’t went off. That was before we knew that it was only the big necklace that would go off if I fell. And that I was supposed to push it no matter what and I didn’t know that. That was the only thing that was wrong when it was first sent to me. It was all set up, but it wasn’t explained to me how to use it. And I pay an extra $10 a month because I’m diabetic. Nevertheless, I feel safer with it. If somebody is trying to get in my house, I could always push the button. It may not be the right help but might scare them off also. Every elderly person especially those who live alone should have a medical alert device.

When it comes to the costs associated with the system you want to make sure that you’re getting everything you possibly can. You don’t want to spend a lot of money on something that is not going to work for you and you don’t want a system that is going to be too far below what you’re actually looking for in services either. When it comes to costs, the absolute base packages for this system do come out in an average range for their competitors, which is definitely a benefit, but you’re going to see a range of different upgrades as well that you’ll want to keep an eye on.

First, the billing plan is skewed to provide benefits if you purchase an annual or even a semiannual plan versus paying per month. If you pay by the month you end up with costs slightly over $30 per month. If you pay by the year, however, you end up with costs that average out to approximately $27 per month, which means you’re going to save a decent amount of money, but there are options to make the plan work for you and how you have the money available.

With any of the advanced plans, you’re going to get improved reception and the ability to get emergency assistance to you much quicker and easier than you would otherwise with just the landline system. You’re also going to have improved versatility and mobility if you purchase a cellular or GPS package. Each of them is going to help you maintain your independence as well and offers fall detection to keep you safer when you’re moving around so you don’t have to worry about accidents or injuries that might make it impossible for you to push the button.

If you want to add a spouse to the package you will need to purchase a second device and pay the additional fees, which is going to add on to the costs. When it comes to cancellation you will have no fees as long as you provide a 30-day grace period for the service to be shut down and devices to be taken care of as well.

Basic landline plan:

Cellular plan: $5/month
GPS plan: $10/month

Medical Alert provides a basic service that is moderate in terms of quality compared to other competitors, which makes it a decent choice for those who want a set-it-and-forget-it type of coverage that keeps them in contact with emergency services.

Most people seem to be satisfied with the easy “set it and forget it” service as well as the overall versatility offered. Fall detection assures users their independence can be maintained with little effort.

Customers aren’t always happy about the price point or that customer service does not respond to cancellation claims in a sensible manner.
